Knowing which butt shape you have can be important because you may not have the butt that you want right now.

Different Butt Shapes – And How to Determine Which One You Have (2) Butts – they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes!

Yourskeletal structure determines the main framework for your body shape, and the overall shape that you end up with is determined by the distribution of fat and muscle on top of your skeleton. For the butt, the main factor which causes the particular shape of the buttocks is your pelvis, followed by your fat distribution which is largelygenetically determined.

Different Butt Shapes – And How to Determine Which One You Have (3)

In general, for most people who do not do specific glute training, muscle does not contribute a lot to butt shape as the glutes are generally underdeveloped in most people.

Females and males obviously have very different butt shapes, butthis article will focus mainly on the different types of femalebutt shapes.

Just so you know, no, I’m not making these things up! The whole categorization of something as obscure as butt shapes seem to originally come from the cosmetic surgery field.

Cosmetic surgeons dealing with procedures like buttocks augmentation, liposuction and the like ended up categorizing most women into one of these 4 main butt shape categories.

That’s not to say that there aren’t more types/categories, but these are the ones that seem to be most widely recognized.

Some say there are additional shapes, but sometimes it’s best just to keep things simple, so we’ll cover the main 4 in this article.

Most plastic surgeons recognize four main shapes when it comes to the female derriere:

  • Square – “H” shape
  • Round – “C” or “O” shape
  • Heart/pear – “A” shape
  • Inverted – “V” shape

With reference to the pictures above, you should be able to pick out one of the butt shapes that resembles your own. Don’t be too concerned if none of these matches the way your butt looksexactly – they are meant to be used as a guide only and the sheer amount of variation in the human body means that not everyone will fit into predefined categories.

The Square “H” Shape

This particular shape is caused by either higher more prominent hip bones (you may even have hip dips), or a distribution of fat in the ‘love handle’ area. The overall effect is that the butt looks square shaped and is closer to appearing as astraight up-and-down right below your waist, rather than tapering to the waist with a smooth curve.

So let’s see what this looks like in pictures…

The H-shaped butt belowis due tobone structure of the pelvis and femur (thigh bones):

Classsic H-shape, due to a little bit of fat distribution in the ‘love handle’ area – with somehip dip:

Another H-shaped butt, again due to a wider pelvis which means the waist doesn’t taper towards the butt as smoothly:Different Butt Shapes – And How to Determine Which One You Have (9)

The Round “C” or “O” Shape

Commonly referred to as bubble butts due to their round appearance, a round butt shape is characterized by a fat distribution around the cheeks of the butt – including the upper portion of the cheeks, which causes a rounded effect when viewed from behind. This shape often sits high when viewed from the side, and is usually quite perky and full.

Let’s take a closer look at some C or O-shaped butts!

You should be able to see why they are called ‘bubble butts’ from this fine example:

Another perky bubble butt:

As you can see, O-shaped butts have a lot of volume in the cheeks and the sides of the butt:

The butt below could almost be a H-shape, but its got a lot of fullness in the cheeks and is perky, so I’m going to deem it a round O-shape!

The Heart/Pear “A” Shape

The heart or pear shape is generallyconsidered to be the most feminine of the butt shapes, and is a result of fat distribution around lowerportion of the butt and thighs. This results in a more tapered look from the waistline to the bottom of the butt (hence the “A” shape or ‘upside down heart’ description).

Fat storagearound the butt and thighs in women is caused primarily by the hormone Estrogen. Unfortunately, Estrogen levels can decrease as we females age, which can lead to fat being stored around the abdomen and midsection instead of the butt.

Aging aside, let’s take a look at why this butt is very much admired…

Got curves? The owner of this heart-shaped butt does:

This round and bubbly butt could almost be an O-shape, but I think the waist tapers into the butt more like an A-shape, giving that classic heart shape:Different Butt Shapes – And How to Determine Which One You Have (25)

Another A-shape; you can see how fat stored on the outer thighs just below the butt give an overall heart/pear shape here:

There’s not a lot of junk-in-the-trunk on the petite booty below, but it’s another classic A-shape:

Inverted “V” Shape

The V shape is more commonly seen in older women as lower estrogen levels result in the shift of fat storage from the butt to the midsection. This can result in an inverted shape where the base of the butt is less full than the top of the butt. Perhaps because of this, this butt shape is also associated withsagging.

Let’s see some examples…

There’s not a lot of volume at the bottom of the butt in this V-shape:

The inverted shape or V-shape butt has a lack of volume in the outside part of the lower butt cheeks:

This butt looks likea subtle V-shape to me, though it’s a bit hard to say because the hands are in the way:

The booty below could almost be a H-shape, but the lack of volume in the lower half of the butt cheeks makes me think it’s closer to an inverted V:

Sorry guys, but the area of men’s butt shapes seems to be very much behind (no pun intended) when compared to how much information there is on women’s butts.

As such, there don’t seem to be categories for men’s butt shapes like there are for women’s – not that I’ve come across yet anyway.

(Video) How to Squat Properly to Grow Your Butt!

Men’s butts are inherently different to women’s – due to a whole host of reasons (skeletal frame, muscles, fat distribution), you don’t typically find a guy’s butt that is shaped like women’s.

Male butts tend to have a more ‘capsicum’ shape to them and are typically lacking in volume, but I have also noticed more fatty/rounded ones out there.

Until later, that’s all I can expand in this area, but I’ll be updating this article soon with some more info for the guys!
